The Geriatric Fracture Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Fractures in patients 65 years and older present many unique challenges to recovery and return to function. Brittle bones require advanced surgical techniques to repair, chronic and acute medical conditions increase the dangers of anesthesia, and pre-existing frailty can slow recovery even when surgery is not necessary.

The Geriatric Fracture Program at Cedars-Sinai is a national leader in providing high quality geriatric-focused care for all patients 65 years and older admitted to the hospital with a fracture. In partnership with the Orthopaedic Trauma Service, our team provides multidisciplinary evidence-based patient-centered care focused on the “4Ms”:

Our specialized team meets daily with social workers, case managers, pharmacists, occupational and physical therapists, nurses, surgeons, and internists to coordinate the many facets of a patient’s hospital stay. We work closely with patients and families to help them through the most challenging parts of their hospitalization and recovery. Our services are provided free of charge, regardless of insurance.

As the result of our coordinated services, over 80% of our hip fractures are repaired in less than 24 hours and leave the hospital safely at an average of 3 days after surgery. Our operating rooms are staffed 24/7 with an orthopaedic surgeon who is fellowship-trained in the latest techniques in fracture care with access the most modern technology. Patients are admitted to an orthopaedic specialty ward focused on early mobilization, opioid reduction in pain management, and accelerated return to function. After discharge, our team continues to ensure that patients receive the correct therapy services, medications, and physician follow-ups both in rehab centers and in the home. At the orthopaedic clinic, all patients will meet with a Bone Health Coach to review best-practices in bone density management and future fracture prevention.

We recognize how disruptive and traumatizing even a “simple” fracture can be for patients and families. Through the Geriatric Fracture Program, we strive to help each person return to their activities and quality of life.
